Rolf Nesch

Untitled (Ansicht von Esslingen)
1924

Pastel on firm drawing paper 58 x 42.2 cm Framed under glass. Signed, dated, and dedicated 'Frau Fischer zum Geburtstag/ 18. Dez. 1924/ Rolf Nesch' in pencil upper right. - In fine condition with vibrant colours; faint light-stain in the former mat opening.

The present drawing is a view of Nesch's birthplace Esslingen. Nesch probably dedicated the pastel to the wife of his mentor Otto Fischer, who was director of the Württemberg Museum of Fine Arts in Stuttgart at that time. On Fischer's recommendation, Nesch had been staying with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in Davos a few months earlier; Kirchner had strongly influenced Nesch, as this drawing shows.
